Partners.

View Comments

I have some great partners. I’ve also got some really, really crappy partners. Some of them just know what to do. Others need me to hold their hands while they take a crap. Some just can not figure out what being a partner means.

So……

A partner is:

-A friend who shares a common interest or participates in achieving a common goal

-A member of an intimate relationship

-A member of a partnership

-A business partner

-Partner (business rank), a member of a law firm or accounting firm which is formed as a partnership; sometimes senior employees of the firm may have the title "partner" (e.g., "salaried partner") to indicate a profit sharing status; salaried partners are distinguished from equity partners, who own the business.

-A participant in a partner dance

Things partners should NOT do…

-Throw you under the bus every chance they get

-Use you in a piss poor attempt to further their own careers

-Kiss your ass after doing so

-Ask you for favors after doing so

-expect you to do them favors after doing so

-expect me to NOT give them a reciprocal bus-throwing-under

-Expect me to NOT succeed and leave you bloodied in a ditch off a dirt road in Idaho.

Seriously. When the oldest person at your station is the most immature, idiotic, and pigheaded dumb ass staff member, you know you’re in a ginormous cluster fuck…

87538416v11_350x350_Front

Oh, and some things you should not try to tell me that you are "allergic" to:

-Epi. Seriously? You’re adrenal glands are going to have to disagree

-Sugar. Specifically Glucose. You’re fucking kidding me, right?

-Ammonia? You do understand the difference between an allergy and a hypersensitivity? You get that NO ONE likes how breathing in ammonia makes you feel…

-Right?

-PS… since you are allergic to ammonia, sugar, and epi… what would you like me to do about your "allergic reaction" now that you are in anaphylactic shock? Fucking black magic?

-If you are allergic to sugar why are you drinking a humongo gas station Reese’s Capafrapasugarladencino?

The pediatric dose of Benadryl would actually give you MORE Benadryl than the adult dose… based on weight. F-tard(that is me restraining myself.)

How in the HELL did one small company with 8 full time employees end up with a concentration of 3(THREE) people with the same set of nearly impossible allergies?

You are a walking, crazy talking, plumb fucking nuts train wreck.train_wreck-782867

Miss ya buddy… Can’t wait to see you guys!

Unspoken

Here at the little ambulance that could, we are scheduled by need, and thus we rarely work with the same partner. I have some partners that I love to work with, some that I dread working with, and some that I rarely, if ever work with. As a matter of fact there are two medics I have never worked with.
Every partner has a different way of communicating with their partners. Me… I usually keep to myself. I do my job, then find a place to escape. Some Chat, chat, chat all day long. Regardless of whether I chat back. Others get pissed about everything. Every time something goes wrong(from getting a hang nail to crashing the truck) they scream at the top of their lungs.
I find that GOOD partners need not say a word to communicate. My Brother-from-another-mother and I just know. We walk in, we know whose call it is, who is doing what, and why we are doing it. When the shit hits the fan, we know where eachother will be stepping, what we’re going to do, and when we will do it.
When I work with my favorite partner, we hardly talk on calls. I find that the partners I don’t trust are the ones I talk to the most. I feel like I have to make sure they aren’t f’ing my license throughout the call. But the good ones just do their jobs.
A few weeks ago I was on a call with someone I will call notsogoodmedic and I just couldn’t figure it out. She had to tell me everything she was doing. She’d ask what I wanted to do. She’d ask if we were ready—all while it was her run. I think that calls like this make everyone think we’re all idiots. The patient cant rest because they don’t know if you can handle their care… The LEO’s and FF’s think we’re disorganized and stupid… The patient’s family gets scared because we’re about to take their loved one away and they don’t trust us…
The little ambulance that could has a “reputation”. One that isn’t one most services would be looking for… I just wish that some of the medics here a) saw that reputation b) realized their actions were responsible for it c) gave a damn to change it…
Tomorrow I work with one of my favorite partners, and I can’t wait. When we get a call we both know that the other person is going to do their job and thats it. Is it really that complicated?

Must Have Blackberry Apps…

View Comments
My Blogger Buddy EpiJunky got a new Blackberry, so this led me to post up a little “advice” for her! Her goes…..
So I’ve had be BlackBerry Curve 8330 for about a year now, and honestly, like most CrackBerry users–I’m addicted. I very much doubt I could survive 30 minutes without it, let alone a day.
That being said I have spent almost the entirety of the last year trying to figure out which apps are perfect for ME and my phone. There are a few good resources out there, but the Best is the Crackberry.com Forum and App Store(you have to register, but the advantage is you can send the apps by text straight to your phone). Not as purdy as the BB App store, but much, much better.
So…. here goes, in no particular order:
Google Talk and MSN Messenger from Blackberry(mobile.blackberry.com click on social networking and IM) both FREE
They both run flawlessly and integrate to your profiles perfectly.
Beyond411 Local Search. Now this is most certainly not as pretty as some options, but very functional. Enter in an address for home, work and “other”. Open up the program and select where you are and start typing. It works quickly and while not elegant, it gives very quick results. FREE
Viigo RSS reader. Pretty. A little slower because of this, but very user friendly. You can do anything from set up craigslist alerts to general RSS.
FML for Blackberry. A BB app for the infamous fmylife.com Pointless but makes me smile!
Facebook! If it isn’t on your phone, just download from mobile.blackberry.com for the official!
BlackBerry Messenger! Free, comes loaded on all new devices. I’d die without it…(if you have a BB PIN shoot it over to me at medicthree@gmail.com)
UberTwitter much, much better than TwitterBerry. Updates coming all the time!
QuickPull v2(Beta) Allows you to schedule your phone to restart. Your BB is a computer! You need to do this and it will improve speed and battery life!
YouMail Visual Voicemail. Youmail works by intercepting your messages(with a custom greeting that either you set or you use the computer voice and it greets your callers by name). It has a ton of pay features but the free one automatically downloads the messages to your phone(phone memory or memory card) and then you can play at your convenience. I love this. The BEST part is you can play from your computer! YouMail.com
Blackberry Maps. Comes with your phone. Best mapping out there plus will do driving directions if ya need ‘em!
That sums up what I got going for now! I always try out a few new apps and these are the only ones that have stood the test of time. Let me know if ya gots questions!

This Is Not a Test…

Everyone is familiar with the Emergency Alert System…. You know… That damn “this is a required weekly test” bullshit…
So every day for 8 days straight… I have seen something similar to this:
Problem is…. how can it be weekly (or monthly) when it is every fucking day!!!!
Just what I need to annoy the piss out of me while I’m stressed out to the max!

I hadn't planned on doing this…

Really, I hadn’t. AD’s post was better than I could do… But I have to say something.
First, head over to Remember the Fallen. After I read AD’s post I did a little work on google and found that site. I browsed around and then I found the gallery.
It is full of heart wrenching photos.
This one got me.
With a son of my own, the fear of getting hurt–or worse–at work is ever present. The number of kids out there who have lost their mother, father, brother, sister, grandpa or grandma to war is growing. It hurts. I’m a grown man and I was blubbering like a baby.
It hurts.
May God have mercy on your souls.
God have Mercy.
Some Memorial Day Reads:

I couldn't have said it better….

So I won’t…

Run on over to A Day in the Life of an Ambulance Driver for his Memorial Day post….
Just a little snippet:

When you look with distaste at the tattoos on her new boyfriend, think instead of the former gang kid from Detroit who found a way up and out of poverty in the Army, only to die from an IED blast in Baghdad. And remind yourself that what matters is how he treats your daughter, not the ink on his arms.

Godspeed All.

What they don't tell you…

When I first thought about getting into EMS I didn’t really know anyone in the field. I originally took the EMT-B course in 2003 during my freshman year of college. I didn’t try very hard, and ended up not bothering to take the NREMT exam. I spent some time working various political campaigns, moved a few thousand miles, and never looked back…

Until I did.

I looked back. Over, and over, and over. I couldn’t stop. Something about EMS just caught my eye. Not really “glory”. Because honestly, there isn’t much. EMT instructors are notorious for being negative. They always make everything seem sooooo bad. Something about people in this field leads to trying to make this career seem like it is the worst thing ever.

Honestly, while this career can be challenging–it ain’t that bad.

But what they DON’T tell you is just how boring it can be. How challenging your partners can be. How frustrating patients can be. How heartbreaking the “easy” calls can be. How hard it can be on your family. How much it changes you. Sure–people try. The old, rusty, haggard medic always tries to tell you these things… but there is no way to really figure it out until you are out here, on your own.

When new EMTs walk through our door and want the “truth” all I say is…. “hop in and see. Your perception of my world is going to be completely different that what I tell you. Jump in the seat and see how it feels. You’ll know after one or two calls whether you want this or not. But you HAVE to WANT it to keep going. When you stop wanting it–get the fuck out”.

So… To my readers–When you don’t want it anymore–move on. Shit happens, life goes on, and there are lots of different ways to make a buck–most of them easier.

Godspeed, all. Missed ya!

Um… Yeah….

So, It has been rather apparent that I can’t make my mind up. At all.

In the past 6 months I have:

  • Abandoned MedicThree.com
  • Started and abandoned glutenfreedad.com(no longer hosted)
  • Started and flopped on courtesyshock.com(still up)
  • Started, but done nothing with medicdad.com
  • And now I am back with medicthree.com. Format might be a little different, as you can see, but back I am. I have new motivation for some posts, and my fears of exposure are all but gone. A few people
here know me in real life. One of them is one of my supervisors–but, if I can’t trust her… I’m in a world of hurt anyways!

Anyways… I assure you that by the end of the night there will be an ACTUAL POST HERE…

So… Let me know how things are going! What do you think?!?!?

I found myself sitting at work, thinking of food. I then found myself wandering through LifeHacker.
The fine folks at LifeHacker had a post about SuperCook.com  I didn’t read the post, but the blip got me going…..

“SuperCook Turns Your Kitchen Contents into Yummy Recipes”

So I thought I’d give it a try. After 20 minutes and inputing the contects of my kitchen(from memory… I’m at work, after all!) It maxed out at 2000 recpies…. And a TON of good looking ones!  I’m very excited about the prospect of this… My wife and I have the hardest time trying to decide what to cook, which usually ends with a trip to (insert fast food restaurant here). I hope to try some of the recipes out soon!

Whattaya Think?

So… If you haven’t heard I haven’t been around lately. I have 3 blogs up and running and I can’t decide which I like. Here, medicdad.com, or courtesyshock.com  I had thought of abandoning MedicThree.com for many reasons… But now I’m not so concerned. I’d hate to try and find all that traffic all over, but I’m not sure which to keep..

So, dear readers… I ask you, which should I focus on?
